SEND A SHOEBOX TO A SOLDIER
The Catholic Women's Council is working with Uxbridge Supports Our Troops collecting needed items for our soldiers abroad. Uxbridge Supports Our Troops will mail the collected items in shoeboxes so they arrive for Christmas.
Items need to fit in standard shoeboxes.
We cannot accept aerosol products, scented soap or chocolate candy.
SNACKS - granola bars; hard candy; beef jerky; tuna/chicken packets; protein bars; hard coated gum; individual drink mix packets; microwave popcorn; Pringles; hot chocolate packets; spices (red pepper, cumin, etc. to flavor the MRE’s).
PERSONAL ITEMS – small size sunblock; deet bug repellent; deodorant; baby wipes in soft packages; toothbrushes; toothpaste; non-medicated eye drops; small size lotions; small soaps; socks; hair bands & bobby pins that match hair colors only (this is regulation).
OTHER – decks of cards; small games; current (may be gently used) magazines, i.e. sports, science, historical; new sports wear from local teams, i.e. Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox, Patriots.
Since these shoeboxes will be shipped out for Christmas, we would welcome Christmas inspired paper plates; cups & inexpensive tablecloths; small unbreakable decorations.
The troops always enjoy letters and drawings from children.
There will be containers in the vestibule of the church marked “Shoeboxes for Soldiers” to collect these items. This program will start on September 1st and go through October 7th.
We could use some empty shoeboxes too!
Since November of 1918, concerned women of St. Denis formed an organization to roll bandages and give aid to the young men fighting in World War I and have been unwavering in supporting our armed forces and veterans. The Catholic Women’s War Service Council held bake sales and potluck suppers to raise money for the Chaplain’s Aid, U.S.O., Servicemen’s Fund and the National War Fund. A series of whist parties were held in order to donate a chalice for the men in army camps. Over the years the Council continued their charitable interests by sewing and knitting for the servicemen, purchasing war bonds, holding clothing collections for the war relief, and mailing letters and Christmas cards to servicemen.
We proudly continue our long-standing tradition in support of our men and women serving in the armed forces as well as our local veterans.
